Len Brahams easter throws championship

The Hibernian Throwers Association held its first competition in Castleisland 2001, the Irish National Throwing Championships and in 2002 the championships were held again, in October.
In 2003 two competitions were held in the CIT track in Cork, the “UCC/ITC/Hibernian Throwers Club Easter meet” and the “Cork Summer Throws Fest”. The 3rd National Throwing Championships were held in Dunboyne in September and this has now became their home. In 2004 the 2cd Easter Throws Championships were held in Castleisland and have been held there ever since.
In 2005 Len Braham attended the 3rd Easter Throws Championships having thrown for the first time in years a few months earlier in Dunboyne. Len put on a display that showed he was, at over 70, still at the top of his game, shattering the vast majority of the over 70 mens records. His 41.45m with the Goulding Hammer, 23.79m with the Greek Discus will surely stand unchallenged for years and would have made him a match for many half his age. A few months later Len competed at the national Masters Championships, taking his first national title in years with victories in the 56lb wf, shot putt and the Discus.
Shortly after this Len did not attend the National Throwing Championships in Dunboyne in August. Len would shortly afterwards be admitted to hospital where he passed away in February 2006.

With only weeks to go to the 4th Easter Throws Championships it was decided that the competition would be renamed the Len Braham Easter Throws Championships in honour of the life and achievements of Len and considering that the Easter Throws Championship was the last HTA/ITC championship that Len attended.
Colm and Cathrine Murphy presented a trophy to be given out each year to the athlete who achieved the best performances at the Championships. In it inaugural year it was jointly presented to James Nagle and Tom Power. Colm had been a long time pupil of Len, training with him in Cork. The 1st Len Braham Easter Throws Championships were attended by many members of Lens family.
